The headline reads: ”GENERALI WAZIMU” (The Mad General). The sub-headline claims: ”Sasa Muhoozi ataka kuinunua Standard Group kutoka kwa Gideon Moi” translated to; Now Muhoozi wants to buy Standard Group from Gideon Moi)
A network of accounts on X (formerly Twitter) shared the purported Taifa Leo cover page using the hashtag #muhoozibuysstandard. By using this single hashtag, the posts spread across the platform, creating a narrative that General Muhoozi Kainerugaba planned to buy the Standard Media Group from Gideon Moi.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba is Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni’s eldest son and Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), making him the highest-ranking military officer in Uganda since March 22, 2024. He is a well-known political figure in East Africa, regarded as his father’s successor.
On June 28, 2026, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba ordered a military shutdown of Nation Media Group (NMG) assets in Kampala, effectively taking NTV Uganda and The Daily Monitor off the air over critical domestic reporting. Nation Media Group (NMG) is East Africa’s largest independent media house, operating in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda. NMG has more than 10 million digital subscribers and followers across its numerous digital platforms, news applications, and social channels across the region. The Daily Monitor was founded in 1992 as an independent voice in Uganda and has been in continuous operation for over 33 years. It is Uganda’s leading independent daily newspaper.
The crackdown was over alleged misreporting and investigative features targeting President Yoweri Museveni’s government, which included :
- NMG’s investigative reports and news features that mostly focused on Uganda’s political and security establishment.
- Unfavorable reporting over the arrest and treatment of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, alongside reporting on governance and human rights accountability, directed at the military chief.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly announced his orders to shut down Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda’s operations in a series of late-night posts on X on June 27 and 28, 2026. He declared that NTV Uganda and The Daily Monitor were “closed for good” and would not reopen without his consent. Furthermore, Muhoozi publicly rejected democratic protections for independent journalism, claiming that he does not believe in a free press and that local media should instead be led by “cadres of the revolution”.
Verification
A review of the authentic front page from June 30, 2026, reveals the headline for that day’s issue read NUSURA WATUUE” (They Almost Killed Us). The day’s headline did not report on General Muhoozi’s alleged acquisition of The Standard Media Group.
A comparison of the two front pages shows that the highlights at the bottom are identical, confirming that the fake version was created from the authentic June 30, 2026, e-paper. The original headline on the abductees was erased and replaced with fabricated text and an image featuring General Muhoozi.
The sub-headline in the genuine copy reads: “Baadhi ya Wakenya waliotekwa nyara wiki jana wasimulia mateso makali waliyopitia mikononi mwa watesi wao” (Some Kenyans who were abducted last week recount the severe torture they underwent at the hands of their captors). The genuine front page features photos and testimonies of individuals who were recently released over the weekend, including human rights defender Davis Lichuma, Fredrick Odhiambo Ojiro, Elisha Alam, Mulinge Muteti, and Michael Mwarenge.
