A TikTok video posted on May 29, 2026, claimed that 200 people were feared dead in Laikipia due to an Ebola outbreak. The video was shared by the TikTok account TikTokTrends_TK1, which, as of May 30, 2026, had 87,400 followers and 1.1 million likes. By May 30, 2026, the video had garnered 19,000 likes, 537 comments, and had been shared 1,275 times.
Background
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Ebola is a deadly disease that is caused by orthoebolaviruses, believed to be hosted by fruit bats. It was first identified in the Democratic Republic of Congo, then known as Zaire, in 1976. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the disease spreads primarily through contact with blood and other bodily fluids from infected people or animals. Its symptoms include fever, vomiting, muscle pain, and sometimes bleeding. Ebola has an average fatality rate of around 50 percent.
According to a report by the CDC, major Ebola outbreaks occurred in 1995, 2000, 2002, 2007, 2014 to 2016, 2018 to 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2025 to 2026. Together, these outbreaks have claimed more than 10,000 lives. The BBC reports that the latest Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda has resulted in more than 1000 cases and 246 deaths so far. WHO has declared the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern.”
On May 26, 2026, the Wall Street Journal reported that the United States was planning to set up a quarantine facility in Kenya for American citizens who had been exposed to Ebola. This news created a furore in Kenya as people questioned why American patients could not be sent to be treated in their own country. The controversy deepened when the Kenyan government approved the establishment of the facility at a military base in Laikipia.
However, this move has been challenged in court through a petition filed by the Katiba Institute seeking to prevent the entry into Kenya of people exposed to Ebola and to halt the establishment of the operation. The high court has granted conservatory orders pending the full hearing.
Verification
In an interview with Citizen TV, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health Aden Duale defended the government’s stance on hosting the quarantine facility in Laikipia, citing longstanding health agreements between Kenya and the United States. Further, he explained that the planned unit at Laikipia is only one of 23 units that will be built by the government. He also mentioned that 16 people in Kenya have been tested for Ebola, but none have tested positive.
A statement from the Kenya Medical Association also confirms that as of May 28, 2026, Kenya has not recorded any cases of Ebola.
A review of the Ministry of Health’s official communication channels and all major news outlets makes no mention of Ebola cases in Kenya. Further, no major fatalities have been reported in Laikipia; if this were the case, Laikipia County would have reported on the alleged outbreak.
