A post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @stewiih, an account that posts political commentary and current affairs content, purports to show the Tuesday, July 21, 2026 edition of the Kenyan daily newspaper The Standard with the headline “Mt. Kenya Foundation Shuns Gachagua.” At the time of review, the post had garnered approximately 1,000 views, 27 reposts, and two likes.

The purported front page claims that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua applied for a Safaricom Paybill number to raise money from the public after the Mt Kenya Foundation allegedly became uncomfortable with funding his political activities.

Several accounts shared the purported front page using the hashtag #BrokeOpposition. By using the same hashtag, the posts spread across the platform, creating a broader narrative about the alleged financial struggles of opposition leaders.

Background

The Mt Kenya Foundation is a lobby group whose membership includes prominent business people from the Mt Kenya region. The organisation has previously been involved in Kenya’s political affairs, including public political engagements and discussions around presidential elections.

The alleged front page surfaced shortly after the July 16, 2026, Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, a closely watched contest in Nyandarua County. The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, Sammy Douglas Waweru Kamau, backed by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, won, defeating the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, Samuel Muchina Nyaga. The by-election was widely viewed as a key test of political influence in the Mt. Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Verification

Piga Firimbi compared the circulating front page with the authentic edition available on The Standard’s ePaper archive and confirmed that the circulating version is fake. The genuine edition does not feature the headline, “Mt. Kenya Foundation Shuns Gachagua,” nor does it contain the claim that Gachagua applied for a Safaricom Paybill number to solicit funds from the public.

The genuine front page carried the headline “Panic in the Valley” and focused on the political impact of the DCP’s victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

Verdict

The alleged Standard front page dated July 21, 2026, is FAKE.
