Did The Standard publish or plan to publish a front page carrying the headline “Ruto kurutwo mburuguto Karau”?

BY: Jackson Ngari

An X post by Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa shared what appeared to be the front page of The Standard newspaper carrying the Kikuyu headline:

“Ruto kurutwo mburuguto Karau”

The senator accompanied the image with the caption:

“Hapo Kesho”The post implied that the image was an authentic upcoming edition of The Standard newspaper. The Kikuyu headline loosely translates to a claim that President William Ruto was facing a crushing political defeat in the Ol Kalou by-election.

Screengrab of the front page circulated on X.

BACKGROUND

Fabricated newspaper front pages have increasingly become a feature of political misinformation in Kenya, particularly during elections and periods of heightened political activity.

Such manipulated pages often exploit the credibility and reach of established media houses to lend legitimacy to claims that were never reported by the publications themselves.

By replicating a newspaper’s branding, typography and page design, altered front pages can easily be mistaken for genuine editions, especially when shared by influential public figures and political actors.

The claim emerged against the backdrop of the July 16, 2026 Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, a contest that attracted significant political interest and was widely framed by political actors as a barometer of influence in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

It is against this backdrop that a purported front page of The Standard newspaper carrying the Kikuyu headline “Ruto kurutwo mburuguto Karau” surfaced online, appearing to suggest that the newspaper had reported a political setback for President William Ruto in the by-election.

VERIFICATION

Piga Firimbi compared the image shared by Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa with archived editions of The Standard newspaper.

The comparison established that the viral image was digitally manipulated using an authentic Standard front page published on April 8, 2025, as the template.

The original front page, which was promoted by Radio Maisha and The Standard‘s official platforms on the same day, carried the headline:

“The bombshell…”

The original April 8, 2025 front page of The Standard newspaper carried the headline “The bombshell…” before being digitally altered to produce the fake image circulated online.

The story focused on allegations made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against President William Ruto regarding state appointments, corruption, and foreign policy.

The doctored version retained the newspaper’s masthead, section references, layout and imagery from the original publication but replaced the main headline and accompanying text with:

“Ruto kurutwo mburuguto Karau”

The doctored front page shared by Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa falsely portrayed a Kikuyu-language headline as an upcoming edition of The Standard newspaper.

Further analysis showed that the fabricated headline was written in Kikuyu, which would be highly unusual for The Standard, an English-language national newspaper whose front-page headlines are published in English.

Visual comparison of the two versions further revealed identical placement of photographs, page references and design elements, confirming that the altered image had been created by editing an existing front page rather than representing a new edition of the newspaper.

The timing of the post further undermines its authenticity. Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa shared the image at 7:05 pm on Thursday, July 16, 2026, accompanied by the caption “Hapo Kesho”, also implying that it represented Friday’s edition of The Standard newspaper.

However, checks by Piga Firimbi established that The Standard’s actual Friday front page carried the headline:

“WHITEWASHED!”

and not the purported Kikuyu headline contained in the viral image.

This means the image shared by the senator was neither an authentic upcoming edition of The Standard nor the newspaper’s eventual Friday publication.

The authentic July 17, 2026 front page of The Standard newspaper carried the headline “WHITEWASHED!” and not the Kikuyu headline circulated online.

VERDICT

The claim that The Standard published a front page carrying the headline “Ruto kurutwo mburuguto Karau” is FALSE
