FALSE: Wamunyinyi Was Not Elected Bungoma Senator in the 8 December 2022 By-Election

By Rodgers Omondi

Ford-Kenya’s David Wafula Wakoli was declared the winner and awarded the certificate.

A Facebook post claiming that former Kanduyi Member of Parliament Wafula Wamunyinyi has been elected the new Bungoma Senator is FALSE.

The post shared on Facebook on 9 December 2022 claimed that Wamunyinyi had emerged victorious in the by-election held on 8 December 2022.

Wamunyinyi contested the senatorial seat on a Democratic Alliance Party of Kenya (DAP-K) ticket under the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition.

The former MP faced off with ten other candidates. But was he elected the Bungoma senator?

According to the official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wakoli of the Ford Kenya party was the winner of the senate seat.

The results posted on IEBC’s verified Twitter account indicate that Wakoli garnered 66,032 votes followed by United Democratic Alliance party’s Moses Mabonga with 45,907 votes.

IEBC did not tweet the number of votes obtained by Wamunyinyi. Kenyan publications such as NationThe StarCitizen Digital and People Daily all reported that the former legislator emerged third with 20,519 votes.

With the victory, Wakoli will now wait for the Senate to communicate a date for inauguration and then officially assume his role as Bungoma senator.

The Bungoma senatorial seat fell vacant after Moses Wetangula resigned to vie for the Speaker of the National Assembly.
