This tweet (archived here) claims that “Tinubu [Bola Tinubu, 2023 Nigerian Presidential aspirant] and Ganduje’s [Abdullahi Gandunje, incumbent Governor of Kano State Nigeria] attacked [President] Buhari’s Helicopter While landing in Kano.” Attached to the tweet is an image of a helicopter with a broken windshield.
Background
Nigeria’s 2023 presidential elections will be held on February 25 — barely a month away. The elections will see former Nigeria Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Former Governor of Lagos Bola Tinubu, former Governor of Anambra State Peter Obi and former Governor of Kano State Rabiu Kwankwaso face off for the top seat. The incumbent president Muhammadu Buhari is limited by the constitution and cannot seek a third term, with Pulse Nigeria reporting that he supports Bola Tinubu.
Verification
As was seen in Kenya during the elections period, misinformation was rife with Piga Firimbi debunking some of it here. As Nigeria prepares for its elections, the spread of misinformation is expected.
A reverse image search of the damaged helicopter leads to this page with multiple articles with the same image including this one by the standard. The image is of Raila Odinga’s helicopter which was stoned in Soy – Uasin Gishu County in April 2022 during a rally.
Verdict
The claim that President Buhari’s helicopter was stoned is FALSE.
