Is This Image of Kenyans Rushing Upcountry After Lifting of COVID-19 Movement Restrictions?

A tweep shared the image below claiming that it shows Kenyans rushing upcountry after cessation of movement was lifted on July 6.

Background

Kenya has so far recorded over 10,000 cases of COVID-19 (see up-to-date figures here). President Uhuru Kenyatta lifted the cessation of movement into and out of the Nairobi metropolitan area and also in Mombasa and Mandera counties, which had been in force since April 6, on July 6. He also announced the resumption of local flights from July 15 and international flights from August 1. The nationwide 9 pm to 4 am curfew was however extended for another 30 days.

Verification

A Google reverse image reveals that the image in question was actually taken in India. The image can be found in a New York Times report dated March 29, 2020, as can be seen in from the screenshot below:

The image is of migrant workers lining up at a bus terminal outside New Delhi, hoping to get to their homes, after being rendered homeless and jobless by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationwide lockdown.

From the image, uniformed officers can be seen dressed in khaki, which is the Indian police uniform.

Red, green and orange buses can also be seen in the image, which is characteristic of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses, the main public transport operator of Delhi.

The Times of India reported on the same on March 28, identifying the exact location as Anand Vihar Bus Terminal.

Verdict

The image shared online as being of Kenyans rushing upcountry is in fact from of Indian migrants, making the claim FALSE.
