Did The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) Announce that Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Loan Applications Open on July 15, 2026?

By Mercy Achieng

A notice posted on Facebook claims the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) is opening applications for Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) first-time and subsequent loans for the 2026/2027 academic year on July 15, 2026. The notice dated June 28, 2026, was posted by user Alfred Kipchumba, who, according to his bio, is a student at KMTC and a digital creator.

Background

The Higher Education Loans Board is a Kenyan state corporation functioning under the Ministry of Education. It is responsible for providing loans, bursaries, and scholarships to Kenyan students pursuing higher education.

The Kenya Medical Training College is a public institution operating under the Ministry of Health that trains mid-level healthcare professionals across Kenya. This includes cadres like nurses, clinical officers, laboratory technologists, pharmacists, and public health officers.

The notice was posted following an official announcement that Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students would now be eligible for funding under the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

Verification

Piga Firimbi compared the contact details provided in the notice with the official Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) contact information and found that the phone numbers listed in the image +254 711 052 000 and +254 711 052 400 are inaccurate. The official, verifiable HELB customer care number is +254 711 052 000

By examining prior official updates from HELB, Piga Firimbi established that the board relies on standard letterhead documents, not graphic posters, to communicate key application deadlines and fund disbursements.

On July 1, 2026, HELB issued a statement on its official social media platform X (formerly Twitter), displaying a copy of the same notice with the word “FAKE”

The notice read:

“The KMTC loan application notice circulating online is FAKE and was not issued by HELB.

Always verify all communication through HELB’s official channels only:

📞 0711 052 000, X @HELBpage

Please note: 0711 052 400 does NOT belong to HELB. Do not use this number for any HELB enquiries or services.

Stay vigilant. Verify before you trust”

Verdict

The notice claiming that KMTC HELB loan applications open on July 15, 2026, is FAKE.
