Image of Damaged Road Is From Johannesburg NOT Nairobi

This Facebook post bears an image with the caption questioning whether it shows the state of the road along Moi Avenue on July 23, 2023.

Background

Demonstrations over the high cost of living have led to the closure and destruction of various roads in various parts of the country. According to Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, the damage to the Expressway will cost Ksh706.7 million. He further reported that repairing roads damaged in Kisumu County will cost no less than Ksh200 million after some roads in the area were destroyed during the demonstrations.

Verification

 A Google reverse image search reveals that the image is of a road in South Africa. The alert was sent to warn people about a gas explosion along Bree Street in Johannesburg on July 19, 2023.
