On September 2, 2026, a Facebook post by Hustlers News claimed that The Standard published a front page with the headline “Pay first! ”, and an accompanying claim that Gachagua was demanding financial commitments from Kalonzo in exchange for political support.
The account, bearing a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) logo on its profile, posts political news, commentary and current affairs content, with a strong focus on Kenyan political figures and developments. The post had received 80 reactions, 17 comments and 2 shares at the time of review, indicating it had generated some engagement on the platform.
Background
The political alignment between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Democratic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has become a central focus of Kenya’s shifting opposition dynamics ahead of the 2027 General Election. Kalonzo Musyoka, a veteran politician and key principal within the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, has positioned himself as a frontrunner to challenge the current administration, relying heavily on consolidating regional voting blocs.
Rigathi Gachagua, following his high-profile impeachment from the deputy presidency, has remained highly influential with a massive following in the voter-rich Mount Kenya region. Through his political engagements, Rigathi has been seeking to consolidate opposition leaders and build a broader political alliance. At the same time, Kalonzo Musyoka has continued to position himself as a potential presidential candidate.
In July 2026, reports indicated that Kalonzo’s allies claimed Gachagua had agreed to support Kalonzo’s presidential bid. The Star reported that Kalonzo himself appeared to confirm claims by Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua that Gachagua had settled on him as the opposition’s preferred candidate. However, other similar reports noted that Gachagua had not publicly endorsed Kalonzo.
There have also been discussions about power sharing within the opposition. Reports indicate that coalition leaders have been negotiating the distribution of senior government positions, including the Prime Cabinet Secretary position, parliamentary leadership and Cabinet positions.
Verification
To verify the claim, Piga Firimbi compared the alleged Standard front page shared by Hustlers News with the newspaper’s genuine September 2, 2026 edition. The comparison reveals that the authentic front page carries the main headline “Killings shock”, focusing on police brutality and the findings of the police reform taskforce.
It also features a separate story on the abduction of The Standard Group editor Alex Kiprotich. The genuine edition therefore contains neither the headline “Pay first!” nor the allegations that Gachagua’s DCP was demanding financial commitments from Kalonzo. Contemporary listings of The Standard’s September 2, 2026, coverage likewise show stories on police-linked killings, police recruitment and the abduction of Alex Kiprotich, rather than the alleged “Pay first!” story.
The alleged front page mimics The Standard’s masthead, date and visual style, but its main content has been replaced with the “Pay first!” headline and claims that executive positions were being put on sale.
Additional verification comes from the Wiper Patriotic Front Supporters Facebook page, which shared the disputed image and labelled it “Fake.” This is consistent with the direct comparison between the authentic newspaper front page and the altered version. While there were genuine political discussions involving Gachagua and Kalonzo ahead of the 2027 elections, the evidence examined does not establish that The Standard published a story claiming Gachagua demanded payment from Kalonzo in exchange for political support or government positions.
