Was Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa recently beaten up and chased away for selling UDA propaganda?

By Jael Jepkemoi

This post shared on X (formerly Twitter) claims Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa was beaten up and chased for selling UDA propaganda.  The post shared on 20th May 2026  features a blurry video showing a chaotic scene under a tent where a crowd suddenly surges around a speaker podium.

Background

Didmus Wekesa Barasa is currently serving his second term as the Member of Parliament for Kimilili Constituency in Bungoma County. He was first elected to the National Assembly in 2017 on a Jubilee Party ticket. Ahead of the 2022 general election, he  joined the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), emerging as a highly visible and vocal mobilizer for the ruling party within the Western Kenya region.

Didmus Barasa has established a profile as an outspoken and unyielding defender of the current administration. The Kimilili lawmaker  Barasa has actively come out in strong defense of President William Ruto’s expanding administration framework, notably urging citizens to assess the long term impact of the President’s growing team of advisors. He has also  framed the  government challenges through a reformist lens, publicly asserting that President Ruto inherited a country that had been  looted dry by cartels

Verification

Key frames extracted from  the video clip were cross referenced on Google lens  search Image  to determine the original  date of publication.  The exact visual sequence including the specific layout of the white event tent, the red chairs, and the sudden crowd surge around the microphone podium does not belong to recent events. Archive records from Kenyans.co.ke reveal that the incident actually took place on Saturday, May 15, 2021, during a funeral service in Bungoma County.

The claim  on X asserts that an angry public rose up against the MP. However, an analysis of how the confrontation physically occurred reveals a targeted, politically motivated scuffle rather than a public mobbing. Immediately after the Kimilili lawmaker made his controversial remarks regarding the county administration led by Governor Wycliffe  Wangamati, Hassan Karim, identified as the bodyguard  to Governor Wycliffe Wangamati confronted the legislator.

Verdict

The claim that a viral video shows Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa recently being beaten up and chased away for pushing UDA propaganda is MISLEADING.
