Is this video linked to Governor Sakaja’s ‘Dishi na County’ programme?

Attached to this post on X (formerly Twitter) is a video showing children in what appears to be an impoverished setting being served a meal: maize meal alongside thin watery soup. The caption claims it shows food being distributed in Nairobi County’s Dishi na County programme, run by Governor Johnson Sakaja.

More videos with similar allegations were shared here.

Background

The ‘Dishi na County’ programme is an initiative under Governor Johnson Sakaja aimed at addressing high rates of hunger among school-going children in Nairobi County. It was launched to ensure they have access to nutritious meals, regardless of their socio-economic background. Parents pay only Ksh. 5 daily, and the County covers the rest; it feeds over 316,000 learners across 230 public primary schools.

Verification

To begin with, Governor Sakaja launched the “Dishi na County” programme on June 19, 2023, with the first meals served on August 28, 2023, at Baba Dogo Primary School.

However, a Google reverse image search shows the video had been circulating online since June 2022, debunking claims that it is connected to the initiative. Johnson Sakaja wasn’t even the governor when the video was first shared on social media, further disproving claims that the video is from the Dishi na county program.

There have also been claims that the video shows a school feeding program in Ghana, but they were debunked here.

Verdict

Claims that the video shows the ‘Dishi na County’ programme are FALSE.
