Has Kenya Withdrawn from the World Health Organization?

A video claiming Kenya has withdrawn from the World Health Organization is attached to this post on X (formerly Twitter). The caption further claims that the withdrawal was due to the discovery that a tetanus vaccine contained a sterilizing agent.

The post with the video reads ‘Le Kenya se retire de l’@OMS_Afrique car il a découvert que dans le vaccin contre le tétanos, ils ont associé un produit stérilisant’, which translates to ‘Kenya  is withdrawing from [The World Health Organization] because they discovered that in the tetanus vaccine they have contains a sterilizing agent’.

Background

Barely days into his second term, U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a series of executive orders, some of which have already sparked global debate. Among them is a directive issued on January 20, 2025, formalizing the United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO). The U.S. first announced plans to leave the WHO in 2020, accusing the organization of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic, failing to implement needed reforms, and being politically influenced by other member states.

Other countries are following suit , with Argentina announcing plans to withdraw from the WHO. President Javier Milei, like Trump, cited the organization’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as a key reason for the decision.

Verification

If this claim were true, it would have been officially announced by the Office of the President, the Ministry of Health, or reported by credible media outlets. However, a random search on Google reveals that no such reports have been published.

Kenya is also still listed as a member state of the World Health Organization on the WHO’s website.

A Google reverse image search identifies the man in the video as Dr. Wahome Ngare, an obstetrician-gynecologist. The speech in question took place on June 14, 2024, and was addressed not to Kenya’s President William Ruto but to Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni. This happened before the U.S. withdrew from the WHO, but the timing of this claim seems aimed at misleading people into thinking Kenya followed suit.
