This tweet shared what seems to be the front page of The Star newspaper. It alleges that Justice “Isaac Lenaola received $1.7m from Shollei.” The secondary headline goes on to add that the amount was “meant to influence the presidential election petition in DP Ruto’s favour.”
Background
Piga Firimbi previously debunked such front paper pages. One allegedly by The Time Magazine turned out to have been fake. For this one, the headline read, “The Man Who Will Never be President.” attached to Kenya’s Azimio La Umoja presidential aspirant, Raila Odinga. As well as another, equally fabricated front page allegedly by The Star. This one, also around elections, claimed that IEBC’s chair, Wafula Chebukati was bribed $3M.
Verification
On mgazeti.com, The Star’s publication from August 30, 2022 has a different headline. From this issue, it is evident what part of the front page is edited. That is; the headline, to read; Isaac Lenaola received $1.7m from Shollei. Moreover, this section of the front page has been altered to feature the faces of both Justice Lenaola and Honourable Shollei.
The Star, in a tweet flagged these claims, insisting that, if this publication is not on their official sites, then it definitely is fake.
