Did Kameme FM suspend broadcasting for 30 days following a Media Council notice?

A Facebook post containing alleged claims that Kameme FM and Kameme FM Online would go off air for 30 days.

A Facebook post by user Antonellah Kakuko, which has garnered 292 likes, more than 300 comments and three shares, claims that Kameme FM Official, a leading vernacular station in Kenya owned by Mediamax Limited, offering news, talk shows, entertainment, and music to audiences across the country and Kameme FM Online would be taken off air for 30 days from June 18, 2026, following a show-cause notice allegedly issued by the Media Council of Kenya.

She also shared the claim on her Instagram page, accompanied by what appears to be an official Mediamax Network notice, alleging the stations would suspend broadcasting from 6 a.m. on June 18, 2026, to facilitate internal reorganisation after concerns raised by the media regulator.

Piga Firimbi fact-checked the claim:

A review of the circulating notice revealed several inconsistencies that cast doubt on its authenticity. Among them was the inclusion of the name of Mediamax Network Chief Executive Officer Ken Ngaruiya without a signature or other authentication features commonly found in official corporate communications. The notice also appeared only on social media and could not be traced to any official Mediamax Network communication channel.

To verify the claim, Piga Firimbi reviewed official communications from both Kameme FM and the Media Council of Kenya. On June 16, 2026, Kameme FM publicly dismissed the notice on its verified social media platforms, describing it as fake and clarifying that it had not announced any suspension of its broadcasts.

Piga Firimbi also conducted independent checks on June 18, 2026, the date the station was allegedly supposed to go off air. Kameme FM was found to be broadcasting its regular programming. A review of the station’s official Facebook page further showed that it continued to livestream its programmes on the same date, contradicting claims that it had suspended operations for 30 days.

Further checks established that the Media Council of Kenya had issued a show-cause notice to Mediamax Network over concerns relating to content aired on some of its platforms. However, the notice did not direct Kameme FM or Kameme FM Online to cease operations, nor did it order the stations to suspend broadcasting for any period.

Verdict

The notice alleging that Kameme FM Official and Kameme FM Online would suspend broadcasting for 30 days from June 18, 2026, is FALSE
