Did Cleophas Malala Make This Statement as Claimed?

A digital card bearing the Kenyans.co.ke news website’s logo claims to show a statement allegedly made by Cleophas Malala. The image was shared on Facebook and Twitter

Background

With the August 9 general elections drawing closer, politicians all over Kenya are on relentless countrywide campaigns. Cleophas Malala who is presently serving as senator for Kakamega was elected into office in 2017 on an Amani National Congress ticket and is now aligned with the Kenya Kwanza coalition that is fronting Deputy President William Ruto as their presidential candidate.

Verification

A reverse search on this image revealed that it appeared online on May 24, 2022 after being posted on Twitter. It then made it on Facebook hours later.

Kenyans.co.ke did not post this image on any of their official Twitter, Instagram or Facebook pages.

A fact check on the same image was done by Africa Check who reached out to Brian Muuo, the head of social media at Kenyans.co.ke, concerning the image. “This is fake, you can tell from the font,” Brian Muuo told Africa Check.

Furthermore, no reliable news source has reported or published a video confirming this claim.

Verdict

This digital card alleging that Cleophas Malala has withdrawn his support for William Ruto’s candidature is FAKE.
