Background
On Saturday, August 22, 2026, Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly Moses Wetangula, while addressing a public gathering in Bungoma, claimed that some lawmakers who accompany him to State House collect batches of up to 10 Teacher Service Commission (TSC) employment letters during the visits, and demand up to KSh 400,000 from desperate applicants in exchange for the jobs. That claim stirred an uproar, as it pointed to political involvement in the work of the independent commission, as established in Article 237 of the Constitution of Kenya. That claim confirmed what several politicians have lamented before, in an attempt to prevent the political class from interfering with the commission’s work and unfairly awarding teachers’ employment letters.
