A digital breaking news graphic, styled with Citizen Digital branding and dated September 5, 2026, claims that former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has died after a battle with prostate cancer.

The graphic was shared on Facebook within the public group Jukwa la Siasa Mathare, a political forum boasting over 83,000 members. The post was circulated by Facebook user Hon Nyambune Boaz, who uploaded the news card with the caption “Balala Dead……”

Background 

Najib Balala is a long-serving Kenyan politician who served as Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife across the  Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru  Kenyatta administrations. In May 2026, he transitioned to a global role as Executive Vice-President for Advocacy, Government Affairs, and Research at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).

Verification 

A social media check of former Tourism CS Najib Balala’s official accounts, including his verified X handle and  Facebook page, reveals that on September 5, 2026, he personally debunked the claims. He issued a statement confirming he is alive, in good health, and in good spirits.

A search on the Citizen Digital website reveals no article or official statement regarding the death of former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala.

Major reputable national publications and accredited digital news platforms, including  Nairobi News, People Daily, Kenyans.co.ke, Ghafla!, and LiveNow Africa, published reports directly debunking the graphic and highlighting Najib  Balala’s personal response stating the claim is false.
