Does this video show demonstrations in Nakuru on May 26, 2026?

By Edwin Tumbo

Attached to this post on X (formerly Twitter) is a video that shows a crowd protesting. The post, shared on May 26, 2026, claims that demonstrations were happening in Nakuru on the same day it was published. Similar claims were shared here.

The video was shared under hashtags #financebill2026 and #AfterHoursTilDawnTour.

Background

The video surfaced amid ongoing public participation and debate on the Finance Bill 2026. The discussions come nearly two years after the controversial Finance Bill 2024 sparked protests, forcing President William Ruto to decline assent to the bill following widespread public opposition.

Similar resistance has emerged against the Finance Bill 2026, with some Kenyans strongly opposing several of its proposals. Opposition figures, including Fred Matiang’i, have publicly called for demonstrations against the bill.

Under Kenyan law, a Finance Bill only becomes law after receiving presidential assent and being published as the Finance Act. Kenya’s financial year begins on July 1.

Verification

A Google Reverse Image Search on keyframes from the video, shows the image is from a Facebook post shared by Kuoga Ni December on July 2, 2024.

Screengrab from the original post on July 2, 2024.

The video shared on SHABZ’s X account does show a video of protesters in Nakuru but it is not recent. The video was captured during 2024 finance bill protests.

Verdict

The claim the video shows protests in Nakuru on May 26, 2026 is MISLEADING.
