Was President Ruto’s Germany Trip Cancelled Due to Kenyan Protests as Alleged?

This tweet with a reach of over 200,000 views was published claiming that a meeting between President William Ruto and Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the United Nations was canceled due to the Kenyan protests that took place on March 27, 2023. 

The tweet alleges that the “German leader sent William Ruto back!” Referring to Chancellor Olaf, it adds, “he refused to hold bilateral talks because of the situation back home.” Advising President Ruto, “to sort the mess back home.”

Similar allegations were equally shared by this article on the same day. 

Background

President Ruto’s four-day visit to Germany and Belgium is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations. He will be the first key head of state to attend the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) being held in Germany. 

Verification

Updates from President Ruto’s Twitter account show that on March 27, 2023, he held a meeting with German businessmen. Later he met with the Chairman of the Federal Association for Economic Development and Foreign Trade (BWA), Michael Schumann.

Social media updates,  published on the same day showed President Ruto in a series of other meetings, including a meeting with the president of Germany, Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Schloss Bellevue. 

Most recent updates show President Ruto addressing delegates at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue on March 28, 2023. Evidence that his four-day trip to Europe was not canceled as claimed.
