Is This Image of a Man in a Cloud of Teargas From the Recent Protests?

This image shared on Twitter, claims to show a man teargassed by the police in Nairobi’s Kawangware area on March 27, 2023.

Background

On March 27, 2023, Raila Odinga led the anti-government protests in Kawangware, Dagoretti North, and Kibra. His motorcade made its way to Kawangware at around noon where he made stops to address the public.

Verification

A reverse image search proves the image was taken on November 17, 2017. Raila Odinga was returning from the United States of America and Joseph Boinnet the then Inspector General warned supporters against marching to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Despite Boinnet’s directive Raila Odinga’s supporters still went to the JKIA to welcome their leader and the police reacted by lobbing teargas canisters at the crowd to disperse them.
