Is this digital poster attributed to Standard Digital Legitimate?

Social media posts shared here, here, here and here, show a digital poster bearing the Standard Media logo and graphics template. It has been widely shared on X and Facebook since it surfaced for the first time here on March 15, 2024.

Background

Fuel prices fell in Kenya in March after the Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced a reduction. “Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene decrease by Kshs 7.21, Kshs 5.09 and Kshs 4.49 per litre respectively,” EPRA said in its monthly statement. The announcement was made hours after President Ruto told Kenyans in a speech in Kericho to expect a reduction in fuel prices. “I told you to give me a little chance to improve this economy,” Ruto said, “Expect them to announce lower fuel prices today.”

Verification

The digital poster was not shared on Standard Digital’s official X, Instagram and Facebook pages where the media house shares all its news updates. In addition to that, the text in the image has grammatical errors atypical of legitimate news updates.

Piga Firimbi reached out to Standard Digital who flagged the digital poster as fake. “This is not our post, it’s fake,” Standard Digital responded via text.

Verdict

The digital poster being attributed to Standard Digital is FAKE.
