A Facebook post published on 20 August 2026 by Dtr Owiti Owayo, tagged #Fedora claimed that Atwoli had “escaped death by a whisker.”
Owayo’s page describes him as a 2027 aspirant and political commentator. At the time of this check, the page showed about 168,000 followers and followed about 1,300. The Atwoli claim on Facebook was posted on 20 August 2026 at 10:47. By the time of the screengrab, the post had 1,700 reactions, 234 comments and 100 shares.
Background
On Wednesday, 19 August 2026, a Eurocopter EC130 B4, registration 5Y-GYM, operated by Lady Lori Helicopters, crashed near Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County at about 9:13 a.m. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the aircraft was flying from Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area. All seven people on board died: six passengers and Kenyan pilot Josh Outram. The cause of the crash has not been established, and an investigation is underway, though the black box is still missing.
Lady Lori said the flight was a charter carrying guests of luxury operator &Beyond. The passengers included Michele Sensi-Contugi, director-general of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan.
Five American citizens were also among those killed, including José Alberto Suárez, a senior Telemundo executive, and Roger Edward Duarte, a Miami-based entrepreneur. The seventh victim was Kenyan pilot Josh Outram
Ecuador and international reports described Sensi-Contugi and his wife as tourists travelling in Kenya, rather than as officials on a state visit.
The Facebook post ties the alleged near-miss to Atwoli’s 2022 fight with William Ruto and calls him a “marked man.”
Before Ruto became president, Atwoli was among his loudest opponents. He backed Raila Odinga’s Azimio ticket, said as early as 2014 and again in 2019 that Ruto “will never be president,” and in February 2022, while campaigning with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta in Mombasa, told residents of Sugoi to cut down trees so Ruto would have nothing to hang himself from after losing (“Kateni miti”).
Ruto answered in kind, calling Atwoli “mzee wa nyororo” and, over an NHIF court fight, a “stupid” and “foolish” man.
The tune changed after the August 2022 result. By September, Atwoli said Kenyans should rally behind the president-elect so he could form a government, later framing the insults as “campaign tools.” In December 2022 the two met at State House; Ruto apologised (“Nilimkosea heshima”) and they joked about “kateni miti” and “mzee wa manyororo.”
Atwoli’s public line since then has been that COTU works with the government of the day. He has claimed credit for urging Ruto to back Odinga’s African Union Commission bid, hosted Ruto at his Khwisero home in January 2025, and in January 2026 said he had been Ruto’s “fiercest opponent” but that “the only person who can take Kenya to first-world status is Ruto.”
In March 2026 he was re-elected unopposed as COTU Secretary-General for a sixth term and told delegates to support Ruto’s housing and roads programme. In late August 2026, after the crash claims, he was in Western Kenya urging the Mulembe community to back Ruto’s 2027 re-election, warning Edwin Sifuna’s backers and demanding Boni Khalwale apologise to the president.
Verification
The Facebook post was published by Dtr Owiti Owayo, whose page describes itself as “THE ACCOUNT FOR THE 8TH MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, RARIEDA CONSTITUENCY | THE MASTER OF POISON PEN LETTERS.” Its bio also describes the author as “Kich” (bee), says he can “viciously sting you in the same fashion the yellow Sugoi bees stung Baba,” and uses the hashtag #Fedora.
The page lists Abu Dhabi and Kibra Constituency and links to facebook.com/kichmakende. It is not an official parliamentary account. Rarieda’s sitting MP is Otiende Amollo, and Rarieda has only had 6 Members of Parliament.
Owayo has previously been associated with a false attribution involving Atwoli; in 2017, Nairobi News reported that a fake speech attributed to Atwoli and posted by Owayo was shared hundreds of times before Atwoli disowned it.
Piga Firimbi also compared the Facebook post with KCAA and operator statements, reporting on the victims, Ecuadorian government confirmations, and Atwoli’s X activity on 19–20 August 2026.
The crash happened. That is not in dispute.
However, claims that Atwoli was involved in the flight are not supported by the available evidence. Available reporting instead identifies the occupants as six passengers and one pilot on a charter flight carrying tourists connected to &Beyond.
Atwoli’s 20 August response therefore addresses the central allegation that he was supposed to be on the helicopter. He posted a screenshot of the Owiti Owayo claim, dismissed it as “FAKE,” and wrote:
“Please disregard all these lazy and fake stories from these social media addicts, idle doomscrollers and master spreaders of misinformation and fake news.”
No official statement, flight manifest, operator comment, diplomatic note or independent report identified Atwoli as a passenger on 5Y-GYM or established that he had been booked on the flight.
There is likewise no published evidence establishing that Sensi-Contugi came to Kenya at Atwoli’s invitation, that Atwoli planned to accompany the tourists to Samburu, that he intended to proceed to Kilifi for dinner, or that an Upper Hill “crisis meeting” caused him to cancel the trip.
The original Facebook post itself also contains a notable error, referring to Atwoli as “Sex Gen” rather than Secretary-General.
The political add-on that Ruto “doesn’t forgive” and that the alleged near-miss proves Atwoli is “marked” is presented as motive, not evidence. Investigators have not attributed the accident to sabotage or political targeting. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Atwoli’s recent public political activity also provides context for the claim. His public support for Ruto’s second-term bid, including his 19 August “two term enthusiasts” post, does not support the Facebook post’s suggestion that he remains a political opponent awaiting retaliation.

That same public record also explains why a flying photo from the morning of the crash was easy to misread.
At 7:41 a.m. EAT on 19 August, about 90 minutes before the Samburu accident, Atwoli posted on X a photograph with the caption: “With my two term enthusiasts as we prepare to fly. God Bless.”
The image shows a commercial passenger cabin, not a helicopter: Atwoli is seated in an airline-style seat with children and a woman standing in the aisle. “Two term enthusiasts” matches the pro-Ruto 2027 language he has used in 2026, not a Samburu safari party.
The photograph does not establish his destination. Nothing in the image, caption or timing places him at Loisaba, Suyian, Ololokwe or on 5Y-GYM.
It does show that he was travelling that morning on a different aircraft, which may explain why his name was later linked to the crash.
Verdict
The claim that Francis Atwoli narrowly escaped the fatal Ololokwe helicopter crash after inviting Ecuador’s intelligence chief to Kenya and cancelling his trip at the last minute is FALSE.
