A post on Twitter shared on February 27, 2023 under the hashtag #SayNoToLGBTQinKENYA, contains a video with a statement allegedly by U.S. President Joe Biden. In the video, Joe Biden is heard supposedly condemning the LGBTQI community. A statement made in the 1-minute and 35-second long video targeting trans individuals says;
“You will never be a real woman. You have no womb, you have no ovaries, you have no eggs. You are a homo-sexual man, twisted by drugs and surgery into a crude mockery of nature’s perfection. Deep inside you feel the depression creeping up like a weed, ready to crush you, under the unbearable weight. Eventually, it will be too hard to bear. You’ll buy a rope, tie a noose, tie around your neck and plunge into the cold abyss. Your parents will find you, heartbroken but relieved that they no longer have to live with the unbearable shame and disappointment.”
“They will bury with a headstone marked with your birth name and every passer-by for the rest of eternity will know a man is buried there. Your body will decay and go back to NGLHRC dust and all that will remain of your legacy is a skeleton that is mistakenly male. This is your fate, this is what you choose. There is no turning back.,” it concludes.
Background
Claims around this video go back to February 24, 2023, after the Supreme Court upheld a petition to register LGBTQ organizations by the NGO board.
Ten years ago, Eric Gitari, former executive director for the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) contested a ruling that barred their organization from being registered as a Non-governmental organization by the NGO Board.
The petitioner, Eric Gitari, sought to register NGLHRC, with the objective to advance human rights and address the violence and human rights abuses suffered by gay and lesbian people. His application was however rejected on grounds that his propositions looked to protect gay and lesbian individuals. Legally, Kenya criminalizes, “carnal knowledge that is against the law of nature is liable to imprisonment for 14 years.”
During the ruling, the court noted that “the right to freedom of association is a human right, vital to the functioning of any democratic society as well as an essential prerequisite enjoyment of other fundamental rights and freedoms, we hold that this right is inherent in everyone irrespective of whether the views they are seeking to promote are popular or not.”
Verification
A reverse search shows the same video appears under a publication by the Telegraph, published on January 25, 2023. Going by President Biden’s body movements in the original video and those in the fabricated video, it is evident that they’re the same video, but the audio is tampered with.
For instance, at minute 5’00” in the original video, President Biden slightly raises his hand to scratch his forehead, something he does in the fabricated video.
Deep fake videos such as this one are artificially generated in a way that the audio in one video is replaced with another, oftentimes used to spread false information. During creation, there are generators, which create phony content, and discriminators which sieve whether the content is real or fake and give recommendations on how to improve the next generated content. Both of these create a generative adversarial network (GAN).
