This graphic surveillance footage has widely been shared between July 20, 2021 and August 02, 2021. There have been tweets and Facebook posts claiming that a Florida man stabbed his wife over extramarital issues. The video showing the alleged Florida man walking into his wife and an unidentified man has a timestamp running between 13:13:12 and 13:14:22 recorded on July 17, 2021.
Background
According to a report by the UN Women, intimate partner and sexual violence against women is a major public health problem. The same report states that as many as 38% of all murders of women are committed by intimate partners. The pandemic has had its contribution to exposing women to abusive partners and its risk factor as women have been forced on lockdown at home with their abusers.
Additionally, there have been links such as #AntiDomesticViolenceDuringEpidemic advocating against gender-based violence during the pandemic.
Verification
Fragments from a reverse image search show that this incident happened in Guadalupe district, Pacasmayo province in Peru. The mother of two, identified as Fiorella Liseth, was stabbed more than 30 times before bleeding to death.
After a further search with keywords; ‘Fiorella Liseth,’ results show that this incident was featured on Peru21. Identified as Elmer Lucano, the man seen holding a knife in the footage confessed to the killing. According to Peru21, Elmer Lucano has had several police complaints, including physical and psychological violence and abandoning his home since 2017.
On July 20, 2021 protesters took to the streets to demand justice against the brutal murder of Fiorella. These protesters are seen carrying placards written; ‘Justicia para Fiorella’ translated as ‘Justice for Fiorella.’
According to the United Nations Population Fund, gender-based violence has continued to persist in Peru. While the number of survivors of violence seeking remote services has increased.
Additionally, the World Bank says that violence against women is the most widespread form of violence in Peru. This has become a barrier preventing women from fully participating in social and economic aspects of their communities.
