Does This Video Show Chaos Experienced in Eldoret Following Ruto’s Chaotic Kisumu Visit?

On November 10, 2021, this video was shared on Twitter of alleged chaos in Eldoret, following the Deputy President’s visit to Kisumu. A number of replies to this tweet term this video as an old video and others as misleading. Precisely, when and where was this video taken?

Background

In the ongoing campaign rallies ahead of the 2022 general elections, cases of violence have been reported. One of these was during Deputy President William Ruto’s visit to Kisumu on November 10, 2021.

During this unrest, his motorcade was stoned by rowdy youths which called for intervention from the police.

Verification

Reverse image searches show that this video had earlier been shared on Facebook, on May 1, 2021. According to this account, this was taken during a political rally in Eldoret. However, in this video, songs recited during Cheptilet, an initiation ceremony among the Kalenjin community in Kenya, can be heard.

Narrowing down to where exactly in Eldoret this video was taken, Google Earth shows that this is Ronald Ngala Street in Eldoret, opposite Zion Mall. From both views, there are five visible billboard spaces as marked in red, a zebra crossing, as marked in black and the Kabuliot building which hosts the Bank of Africa, as marked in blue.

Verdict

The video claiming to show a protest in Eldoret following Deputy President William Ruto’s visit to Kisumu is FAKE.
