Was This Car Burnt Down by Bodaboda Riders Who Shouted “Choma Dynasty”?

An image showing a black car on fire has been published on various Facebook accounts claiming that the car was supposedly burnt down by Kenyan bodaboda riders who are said to have uttered political slurs while razing down the car.

Text on the post indicates that the bodaboda riders had apparently shouted “Choma Dynasty”, which translates to “burn down Dynasty”.

Background

Political tension in Kenya has been building up, pending possible constitutional amendments through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and ongoing campaigns ahead of the 2022 general elections. The phrase ‘Hustler vs Dynasty’ which is used in the Facebook posts refers to opposing political camps, with the Hustler camp being led by Deputy President William Ruto and the Dynasty referring to President Uhuru Kenyatta and political leader Raila Odinga’s camp.

Verification

A Google image reverse search reveals that the image circulating on Facebook is in fact of an accident that occurred along the A19 road in the UK. The accident took place in 2015 and according to an article published on the Gazette Live news website, the black car had just collided with another car before it began burning down.

At the same time, reports that such an incident took place in Kenya are however true as it is mentioned in an article published on The Star website, and was also mentioned by President Uhuru Kenyatta who disapproved of the use of the ‘Hustler’ and ‘Dynasty’ terms. According to The Star report, bodaboda riders in Western region set a car on fire since the car was involved in an accident with a bodaboda, and the riders are said to have shouted “dynasty” while at it.

Verdict

Facebook posts claiming that the image of a burning car is from an incident caused by bodaboda riders in Kenya are FALSE.
