Background
Piga Firimbi has previously debunked a fabricated donation appeal dubbed ‘Donation Appeal for Starving Kenyans’ here. In this fact-check, Piga Firimbi found a Red Cross warning against “the mushrooming” of fake paybill and Mpesa details claimed to fundraise towards the drought crisis while using the Red Cross logo and brand. Such posts could potentially con unaware Kenyans.
Verification
According to the Facebook page transparency, the ‘Red Cross Donation Kenya’ page was created on March 20, 2022, the same day when the page posted an appeal for donation towards hunger-stricken Kenyans in the North-Eastern region. This indicates that the page was most likely created for this specific reason.
At the same time, the Kenya Red Cross, through verified Twitter and Facebook accounts announced their only legitimate Mpesa details where well-wishers can send donations.
