These images of Raila Odinga were shared on March 27, 2023, claiming to show the opposition leader in Mombasa.
Background
Ahead of the second day of #MaandamanoMondays, Inspector General of Police, Japheth Koome termed these protests illegal. In a statement, he said the police are ready to enforce law and order.
IG Koome also confirmed that he had withdrawn the security of politicians who had confirmed their participation in these protests. Member of Parliament for Rarieda Constituency, Otiende Amollo, is one of those affected by this decision.
Verification
The first image that shows Raila Odinga and Mombasa’s governor, Abulswamad Nassir was taken earlier this year. According to a reverse image search, this was during Raila’s first political tour to Mombasa after the last general elections.
The second one on the other end dates back to 2017. A reverse search directs to the same image in a post shared on Raila Odinga’s Facebook page, in June 2017. This, according to the post was during the 2017 Ramadhan celebrations. The same image was earlier shared by former Mombasa Governor, Ali Hassan Joho, on June 9, 2017.
A few hours after these images were shared, Raila’s convoy was spotted in Kawangware, evidence that Raila was in Nairobi.
Verdict
Claims that Raila Odinga was in Mombasa on March 27, 2023 are FALSE.
