Is This Video of Raila Odinga Conceding Defeat Recent?

By Nancy Oseur

Attached to this tweet is a video claiming to show presidential candidate Raila Odinga conceding defeat, while supposedly congratulating president-elect William Samoei Ruto. The tweet was published on August 16, 2022. See the video attached below;

Background

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati’s announcement on the concluded general elections elicited various reactions. He declared William Samoei Ruto as the president-elect with 7,176,141 votes.

Prior to Chebukati’s announcement, Azimio’s chief agent,  Saitabau Ole Kanchori, while addressing the press at The Bomas of Kenya, alleged that the system was hacked.

Verification

The claiming to show Raila Odinga conceding defeat is manipulated. The original video is from 2013 when he was agreeing with the Supreme court’s decision to uphold the election results. See the video uploaded in March 2013 here. He then urged his supporters to soldier on and resolve to reform politics and institutions for peace and security of the country.

Since the stand off witnessed at Bomas yesterday, Raila Odinga is yet to address the nation.

Verdict

The video claiming to show Raila Odinga conceding defeat is FAKE.
