The video title is clickbait.
A video shared on YouTube claiming to show Kenyan President William Ruto telling a critic to leave him and his wife alone during his November 2022 trip to South Korea has a FALSE HEADLINE.
The video has a cover image of Ruto and his wife Rachel with the title: “LEAVE ME AND MY WIFE ALONE: PRESIDENT RUTO TELLS CRITIC IN SOUTH KOREA AFTER ASKING THIS QUESTION!”
The video was shared on 23 November 2022. Ruto had travelled to South Korea on a three-day official visit and had met the Kenyan community in Seoul on 22 November.
From other news reports, PesaCheck established that the video we are fact-checking is from the said meeting. A member of the audience is addressing Ruto and is heard requesting the president to fast-track Kenya’s engagement with South Korea so that more Kenyans get maritime employment opportunities in the East Asian country.
The president responds: “I want to tell you, Joseph, that’s why I’m here. I’ve not come as a tourist.” This draws laughter from the gathering.
Ruto further explains that his visit was specifically to address issues regarding the blue economy and jokes that Joseph had a ‘leakage’ of the visit’s mission.
Nowhere in the video does the president mention his wife or tell off a critic as the video’s title suggests.
