The photo was taken in June 2020 in the Philippines.
A tweet sharing a photo purporting to be of police engaging protesters at Kamukunji in Nairobi on 7 December 2022 is FALSE.
The photo was shared at midday when Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya leader Raila Odinga and other leaders were holding a consultative rally at Kamukunji.
The post creates the impression that there was chaos at Odinga’s Kamukunji event.
PesaCheck performed a Google reverse search on the image and established that it was taken in June 2020 and not on 7 December 2022 as alleged.
In the photo, the police hold shields branded ‘QCPD’ and ‘PULIS’.
A Google search for the initials ‘QCPD’ showed that they stand for Quezon City Police Department, which is a police district under the Philippine’s national police.
Additionally, we performed a Google translation for the word ‘Pulis’ and established that it is Filipino for ‘Police’.
We also did a keyword search to find out whether any credible media house had reported anything about the Kamukunji protests on 7 December 2022, and the results were negative.
PesaCheck has examined a photo shared on Twitter purporting to be of police engaging protesters at Kamukunji in Nairobi on 7 December 2022, and found it to be FALSE.
This post is part of an ongoing series of PesaCheck fact-checks examining content marked as potential misinformation on Facebook and other social media platforms.
