Image Showing a Police Operation at a Market Is From Sudan NOT Bungoma

This tweet, published on July 19, 2023, bears an image showing police running an operation at a market.  The caption claims it is Bungoma County.

Background

The tweet was shared amid the second day of the three-day protests against the high cost of living. The protests were called by the opposition Azimio la Umoja. This led to the deployment of anti-riot police to various parts of the country, who engaged the protesters in running battles. Many people were injured and arrested as the chaos ensued. 

Verification

A Google reverse image search reveals that the image is from Sudan. It was first attached to articles published on July 18, 2023, following the arrest of some of the perpetrators of the Blue Nile tribal clashes by the Rapid Support Forces. The clashes in the Blue Nile region have left hundreds dead and thousands more displaced. More articles bearing the same image, reporting the arrests were published here, here, here, and here.
