Are These Offers Supposedly by Carrefour Supermarket Legitimate?

This Facebook account under the username Carrefour Fans is advertising offers and promotions supposedly being offered by the Carrefour supermarket chain. The most recent post from the account shared on November 21, 2022, alleges that Carrefour is donating 670 sewing machines and washing machines that cannot be sold due to a few scratches and minor damages. They further assure interested individuals that the items are in working order and will randomly deliver them to anyone who comments with “DONE”.

Background

Carrefour is a French supermarket chain that was started 60 years ago by entrepreneur Marcel Fournier. Their first supermarket was opened in France in June 1960 and later in July 1963, they opened their first hypermarket. In 1993, the group expanded its operations to Italy and then to China in 1995. To celebrate 50 years since they opened their first hypermarket, Carrefour joined forces with the CFAO group to develop different store formats in West and Central Africa in 2013. The retailer opened their first branch in Kenya in 2016 and currently has 14 outlets within the country.

Verification

To begin with, information on the donations supposedly being done by Carrefour has not been shared on their official Facebook account, their official Instagram handle nor has it been shared on their official Twitter handle.

If one wishes to participate and win the giveaways they are required to reply with “DONE”. All users that have responded to this post are then redirected to click on the sign-up link at the top of the page. On the legitimate Carrefour page, the link at the top of the page redirects you to a phone number you can use to reach out to them in case of any queries. The link on the Carrefour fans page redirects you to a google sheet inviting people to start trading with Binary option, which has nothing to do with Carrefour.

Piga Firimbi also reached out to Carrefour via direct message on their official Twitter handle and they dismissed the account and the post as fake and clarified that legitimate communication from the company is only relayed through their official social media pages.

Verdict

Offers purportedly from Carrefour being advertised by this Facebook account are FAKE.
