Was Nigeria Presidential Candidate Featured on Time Magazine?

This tweet (archived here) states that “Only 4 Nigerians have ever made the front page of TIME Magazine” and goes ahead to list the four. The tweet is accompanied by what appears to be the front page of Time magazine with a portrait of Peter Obi on it.

Background

On Saturday February 25, 2023 Nigeria held their national election to elect a president to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari. These elections were touted as the tightest since Nigeria’s return to democratic leadership after a series of coups and military leadership. The 2023 election has four candidates: Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party), Bola Tinubu (All Progressive Congress), Peter Obi (Labour Party) and Rabiu Kwankwaso (New Nigeria Peoples Party).

The Time Magazine is an American magazine based in New York. The magazine features notable people on its front cover, mostly people of widespread fame, popularity or influence.

Just like during Kenya’s election, misinformation is rife during this momentous period in the country’s democracy.  Piga Firimbi previously fact-checked the appearance of Raila Odinga on the Time front page here. A reverse image search of the image on this tweet leads to these pages here with the image published on the Time front page.

Verification

Piga Firimbi established that Time magazine publishes weekly. The frontpage of the latest issue (Feb. 27 – Mar. 6) is shown below.

Frontpage of TIME magazine Feb. 27/Mar. 6 Issue.

Verdict

The claim that Peter Obi was featured on Time magazine is FALSE.
