Video Allegedly Showing a Building Collapsing in South Africa Is Actually From Ghana

This post on X claims to show a building collapsing in South Africa due to the Cape Storm.

Background

South Africa’s Western Cape Province experienced heavy rains on the weekend of September 24, 2023. The deluge left homes submerged with roads and other infrastructure destroyed. 11 people living in one of the informal settlements died of electrocution after water swamped illegal connections to the powerlines. According to the Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, more than 80 roads were closed and at least 15,000 homes were cut off from the power grid.

Verification

A Google reverse image search reveals the video was first posted on the Joy News YouTube Channel on September 24, 2023. The three-storey building under construction at Ofankor Market near Asofan in Accra tumbled under unclear circumstances. The Ghana National Fire Service Public Relations Officer Assistant Divisional Office reported no casualties from the accident.
