Did the Ministry of Health Issue This Statement on COVID-19 Measures?

By Emmanuel Oduor

On March 1, 2022, this communique did rounds on social media purportedly announcing the revision of some COVID-19 containment measures. But did this communication really originate from the Ministry of Health?

Background

On March 13, 2020, Kenya confirmed its first COVID-19 case and this changed the normalcy of life. Governments all over the world with no exception to Kenya took measures aimed at containing transmission of COVID-19. Such measures included a ban on social gatherings, imposition of a dusk to dawn curfew, cessation of movement, compulsory wearing of face masks among others.

Verification

The communication herein highlights key aspects of what is purported to have been lifted by the Ministry of Health in Kenya. Claims in this statement are misleading, such as the suspension of mandatory wearing of face masks in public spaces, which was officially announced on March 11, 2022 but the statement indicates that it was lifted on March 1, 2022 (see screen-grab below).

However, the Ministry of Health through social media later issued a rejoinder flagging this communication as fake.

Verdict

This statement purporting to announce the revised COVID-19 containment measures is FAKE.
