Was McDonald’s Offering Free Coupons to Vaccinated People?

On July 16, 2021, this tweet went up the internet indicating that Pfizer and McDonald’s allegedly collaborated to encourage vaccination against COVID-19. However, it received criticism for offering a coupon meal to whoever takes the jab in any of the designated vaccine clinics.

Background

In a goal to have 70% of America’s population vaccinated, the White House launched a partnership with Uber and Lyft. This offer which ran between May 24, 2021 and July 4, 2021 was an initiative to offer Americans free rides to vaccination sites.

According to this press release, “people will be able to simply select a vaccination site near them, follow simple directions to redeem their ride, and get a ride to get them to and from a nearby vaccination site free of charge.”

Verification

McDonald’s launched an initiative to encourage people to take up the COVID-19 vaccine in California on June 21, 2021. This was done through its mobile app. It states in this statement, “people who receive a vaccine at McDonald’s will also get a coupon for one free menu item as a thank you for doing their part.” See the statement from McDonald’s below.

This initiative was done in partnership with California’s Department of Public Health, which issued a statement on July 18 announcing that more than 70 McDonald’s restaurants in California will set up vaccination sites as from June 21, 2021.

In Michigan, Flint McDonald’s also partnered with the Genesee County Health Department to organize a vaccination clinic between July 8, 2021 and July 10, 2021.

Verdict

It is TRUE, designated McDonald’s chains are offering coupon meals to vaccinated individuals.
