This promotion claims to give away money in celebration of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company’s (KPLC) 100th anniversary. The promotion has circulated on WhatsApp as well as Facebook.
Background
Links containing similar promises of cash prizes in celebration of renowned companies’ fake anniversaries have previously been found to be scams as debunked by Piga Firimbi here, here and here.
The fake promotions show signs of coordinated behaviour, seeing as they claim to celebrate organizations’ anniversaries, requiring interested participants to fill out similar questions on surveys, and eventually asking participants to share the link widely before they can redeem the promised awards. Such are characteristics of engagement bait scams and phishing scams.
Verification
This promotion does not appear on official communication platforms belonging to KPLC, including the KPLC website, Twitter, or Facebook accounts where such announcements would ideally be made.
A WhoIs search of the link circulating revealed that the website was registered with a Chinese-based company, Eranet International Limited, as the registration service provider. The link’s domain name is also a red flag. According to Scam Adviser, websites whose domain name ends with tw as is the case with the link circulating (sagrko.tw) are generally considered unreliable and unsafe to use.
Verdict
Posts claiming to advertise a promotion by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) are FAKE.
