Did the Kenya Police Ban Peaceful Demonstrations at the Tanzania Embassy?

By Alice Beryl Auma

A document circulating on social media claims that the Kenya Police Service banned peaceful demonstrations at the Tanzania Embassy in Nairobi.

The document appears to be a press statement from the Kenya Police, containing their logo. It is alleged to have been written by Regional Police commander Augustine Nthumbi.

Background

The Maasai community based in Loliondo and Ngorongoro in Tanzania are facing a brutal eviction threat from their ancestral land, which they have been living on even before the country gained independence.

Videos of Tanzanian police forcefully and violently evicting Maasai’s have been circulating and trending online. An act that has been greatly condemned by the public including Narok Senator Ledama Olekina. The Tanzanian government and UNESCO believe Ngorongoro is overpopulated to the detriment of wildlife.

Verification

The National Police Service on Tuesday, June 14 denied writing any letter, flagging the document in a tweet as fake.

Verdict

NO, the Kenya Police Service did not release a statement banning peaceful demonstrations at the Tanzania Embassy in Nairobi.
