Attached to this tweet is a video claiming to show Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) allegedly firing warning shots at bandits in Pokot, Turkana, and Kerio Valley.
Background
Banditry in the North Rift: Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, Laikipia, Turkana, and West Pokot, has been a menace for years. Regimes have ascended to power and ended their tenures without finding a solution. Current Cabinet Secretary Interior and Administration of National Government Kithure Kindiki promised to smoke the bandits out of their hideout and bring down their financers. However, this is proving to be a tedious task. 125 lives have been lost since June 2021 and locals are asking the government to take action.
Verification
A reverse image search on the keyframes generated from the video shows that the video was first shared on an Instagram page in 2021. It also reveals that the video was also published by the Benteng Islam Channel with a Malayan caption; pasukan anti taliban dibom bardir oleh peluru taliban diprovinsi Panjshir. Google translates this as “Anti-Taliban forces were bombed by Taliban shells in Panjshir Province.”
Verdict
The video allegedly showing KDF soldiers shooting at Bandits in Pokot, Turkana, and Kerio Valley is MISLEADING.
