Is This Message From Justice Njoki Ndung’u?

This tweet claiming that five out of the seven Supreme Court judges allegedly wanted a rerun of the just concluded general election and that Chief Justice Martha Koome was supposedly compromised appears to have been sent out by Supreme Court’s Justice Njoki Ndungu.

Background

The election results for 2013 and 2017 were contested at the Supreme Court, with the 2013 result being upheld and the 2017 one ending in a nullification of the results. The 2022 election was no different with Azimio One Kenya presenting their petition after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati declared William Ruto as the president-elect.

On September 5, 2022, the seven judge bench unanimously upheld William Ruto’s win and on September 13, 2022, Ruto was sworn in as Kenya’s fifth president. On September 26, 2022, the Supreme Court gave its full judgement on the petition presented by Azimio One Kenya as the judges only gave a summary when giving the verdict.  The tweet was shared on the same day as the release of the judgment.

Verification

The Njoki Ndung’u (L.J) account exists on Twitter but it is not justice Njoki’s official account and does not have the verification check on it. The Judiciary, through a tweet, dismissed the message as fake.

Verdict

The message purportedly from Justice Njoki Ndung’u is FAKE.
