This tweet features two images allegedly depicting scenes from the July 12, 2023, anti-government demonstrations.
Background
Since March 20, 2023, Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya political party led demonstrations against the purported punitive taxes imposed by the government through the Kenya Finance Bill, 2023. The demonstrations have led to loss of lives and the destruction of public and private property. Police have also been accused of using excessive force to disperse the protesters.
Verification
The first image was previously debunked by Piga Firimbi, here. The image credited to Reuters shows a man making his way through rising tear gas fired while riot police attempted to disperse supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga on November 17, 2017. The incident occurred after riot police engaged in running battles with Raila’s supporters while attempting to welcome him from a United States trip. The image was also published by The Star, here.
A Google reverse image search on the second image redirects to an article by The Elephant. The photo is part of a collage of images from the March 30, 2023, anti-government protests.
Verdict
Claims that these images are from the July 12, 2023 demonstrations are FALSE.
