OLD VIDEO: Julius Malema Asking Raila to Accept and Move On

On March 22, 2023, this video of Julius Malema calling on Raila Odinga to accept the election outcome amidst weekly Maandamano calls scheduled to take place every Monday and Thursday.

In the video, Malema urges Odinga not to form part of a tradition of causing instability and uncertainty in African governments. He also asks Raila to humble himself and form part of a government that will address the challenges confronting the people of Kenya and not allow history to remember him as an individual who was desperate for power at the cost of the progress of his nation.

Background

On March 20, 2023, Azimio One Kenya leader Raila Odinga and the South African Economic Freedom Fighters party leader Julius Malema led demonstrations in their respective countries.

The Odinga-led protests were against the rising cost of living, election malpractice, and the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioners without including input from all stakeholders. The Malema -led pretests were on the other hand South Africa’s energy crisis and President Ramaphosa’s tenure.

Verification

A keyword search on YouTube using the words “Raila” and “Malema” reveals that this video was first published seven months ago on SABC News.

Malema starts by applauding the people of Kenya for engaging in a peaceful election. He then congratulates William Ruto for winning the elections and calls on him to form part of the efforts in building an independent continent that is free from war and poverty. He also called upon Raila to accept the election outcome.

In the video, Malema referred to the August 9, 2023 elections and not the recent Odinga-led demonstrations.

Verdict

Claims that Julius Malema recently asked Raila Odinga to accept and move on amidst the weekly Maandamano calls are MISLEADING.
