Was Joseph Ole Lenku Elected Chair, Council of Governors as Alleged?

This tweet on September 16, 2022 claims that Joseph Ole Lenku, Kajiado County Governor was elected as the Chair of Council of Governors (COG). Other tweets with similar claims were posted here,here and here.

Background

The Council of County Governors (COG) is an organization established under Section 19 of the Intergovernmental Relations Act (IGRA 2012) that comprises all governors representing the 47 counties in Kenya. The COG’s main functions as stated in Section 20 include providing a mechanism for consultation amongst County Governments, Sharing information on performance of the counties in execution of their functions, facilitating capacity building for governors and considering reports from other intergovernmental forums on national and county interest among other functions.

Following the conclusion of the 2022 general election, the Council of Governors conducted and concluded their three-day induction workshop for Governors and Deputy Governors on September 17, 2022.

Verification

In a press statement by the Council of Governors during the Governors and Deputy Governor’s induction, COG stated that they had successfully completed the induction workshop which would be spearheaded by a set of leadership that was unanimously agreed on comprising of: Anne Mumbi Waiguru, Governor Kirinyaga County as Chair, Ahmed Abdullahi, Governor Wajir County as Vice Chair and Stephen Sang, Governor Nandi County as Whip.

Verdict

Tweets claiming that Joseph Ole Lenku was elected the Chair of Council of Governors are FALSE.
