Does This Image Show a Road in Northern Kenya?

By Naomi Wanjiku

This tweet claims to show a photo of a straight tarmacked road cutting through a desert in northern Kenya.

The photo is captioned, “The never-ending road. Northern Kenya,”.

Verification

However, a reverse image search shows that the road is not in Kenya, but Saudi Arabia.

One of the search results, which is a Bulgarian website, indicates the road is called Highway 10, and is the longest section of a completely straight road in the world.

The road stretches from Haradh to Al Batha and cuts through the Rub Al-Khali desert.

Highway 10 has also been listed as the longest straight road in the Guinness World Records. The book, which lists ultimate record-breaking facts and achievements, notes that Highway 10 was originally built for the former king of Saudi Arabia, King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

The Guinness World Records states Highway 10 is 240km long and cuts through the desert with no bends left or right nor any hills. The stretch has an estimated drive time of two hours.

Eyre Highway in Australia was the previous record-holder of the longest straight road in the world with an estimated stretch of 146km. Known as ‘The 90 Mile Straight’, the Australian road connects the states of South Australia and Western Australia and cuts through the Nullarbor Plain.

Verdict
