A video circulated on Facebook claims that the government of Iceland is looking for men to marry its female citizens for a price of US $ 5,000.
The text appearing on the video reads, “The government of Iceland will pay you to go live there and marry their women. There are 15 women for every man. They are looking for men. Polygamy is fully permitted. And foreigners will get US$ 5, 000 per month”.
The post accompanying the video repeats the claim made by the video.
Verification
However, a review of the immigration guidelines by the government of Iceland, reveals no information about the initiative. In fact, one of the basic conditions for applying for a residence permit in Iceland is proof that the applicant has sufficient resources to support themselves.
Additionally, the ratio of the male to the female population in Iceland has largely remained equal since the 1960s, according to the World Bank contrary to what the claim suggests.
The video contains a watermark of 2KOOL, a US-based YouTube channel that publishes satirical content. 2KOOL published the video in 2018 and clearly labeled it ‘Satire’.
The video has since been shared on various platforms including recently on WhatsApp without attribution or indication that it is a joke.
Verdict
PesaCheck has looked into the video claiming that the government of Iceland is looking for men willing to relocate to the country and marry its female citizens for a price of US $ 5,000, and finds it to be SATIRICAL.
