A front-page circulating on WhatsApp and Facebook claims to be from The Standard started circulating on March 15, 2023. The headline claims that people of the Kuria Tribe have been ordered by people of the Luo community to move out of Migori County and has a similar format and structure to The Standard newspapers.
Background
Protests were witnessed in some places in Busia, Kisumu and Migori County following declarations of mass actions by Azimio La Umoja Party leader Raila Odinga. A meeting in Kisumu on March 15, 2023, hosted by the Communication Authority of Kenya to mark World Consumer Rights Day was interrupted by hundreds of youth canting anti-Ruto slogans. Azimio La Umoja called on its supporters to for countrywide protests on March 20, 2023, insisting that the protests will be peaceful.
Verification
The Standard dismissed the front page as fake news through its official Twitter page. “This is NOT a genuine cover of The Standard newspaper. It is a manipulated front page,” the newspaper clarified.
