Does This Image Show the Impact of Drought in Kenya?

With about 4.35 million Kenyans in need of food assistance, due to the ongoing drought, the National Drought Management Authority now predicts these numbers to rise or fall, depending on the anticipated rains. Out of the 23 Arid and Semi-Arid Lands regions in Kenya, 21 are considered most hit. While this is the case, images and videos have been going up the internet claiming to show this impact. This image for instance claims to show the impact of drought in Kenya.

Background

In the past couple of days, has looked into claims such as this. This one for instance claimed to be an image of a carcass in Mandera county. But this image was taken in Yemen. Another similar post claimed to show an image of president William Ruto flagging off food aid in Turkana.

Verification

Reverse image searches show that this image was taken in Hargududo, Ethiopia. The country is currently experiencing the most severe drought in recent history . The Humanitarian Response further predicts that this might worsen towards the second half of 2022, if the Hageya rains will be below average. 

The lowland areas in the south and south-east of Ethiopia are the most affected. Moreover, between April and May, the World Food Programme managed to feed 2.4 million people in the Somali region of the country and targeted 2.1 million in May and June and 3.3 million in July and August.
