Did Donald Trump Call Kenya a Very Corrupt Country?

By Naomi Wanjiku

This screenshot of a tweet from former United States president, Donald Trump, claims that Kenya is a very corrupt country.

The tweet, which is dated 21 August 2020, also insinuates that Nigeria is far worse than Kenya when it comes to corruption.

“I said Kenya is a very corrupt country in Africa and left you Nigeria because when you are counting evil people you don’t count the devil,” the tweet reads.

Verification

When Trump’s Twitter account was still active, that was not his username. His Twitter handle was “@realdonaldtrump” yet the Twitter account which has published the tweet in question goes by the name “@Trump_Donald01”.

Although Trump is no longer on Twitter, all his tweets have been archived here. Based on the archived tweets, the 45th US president tweeted four times on 21 August 2020. One was a retweet of a post from the White House and the other three tweets were Trump’s original posts — one was a tribute to his late brother and two were video links.

Out of those four tweets, none of them talks about Kenya being a very corrupt country.

Another thing that is off about the tweet is the time that it was allegedly posted. It is not clear whether the tweet was published at 9:40 AM or PM, which is not the case for posts on Twitter.

The format of the date when the tweet was published is also wrong. Twitter records the date of a published post as Aug 21, 2020, and not 21 Aug 2020 as indicated in the fake tweet.

Twitter permanently suspended Trump’s account on 8 January 2021, over what the company termed a violation of its rules.

“After assessing the language in these Tweets against our Glorification of Violence policy, we have determined that these Tweets violate the Glorification of Violence Policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately permanently suspended from the service,” Twitter said in a statement.

Additionally, Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts were suspended for two years, and the former president was also banned from Snapchat, YouTube and Twitch, among others after the Capitol Hill riots on 6 January 2021.

Trump has sued Facebook, Twitter, and Google, alongside their respective CEOs to put an end to what he terms censorship.
